well sometime in septemeber in college we had this 'life skills' class (like you can learn anything about life in a freaking classroom) and this teacher came from delhi and he conversed (not taught) with us on a myriad things. one thing he said remained with me.. he said human beings are broadly classified into 4 different kinds of animals :
1. Fox: a smooth operator..someone who knows how to get his/her work done. you scratch my back and ill scratch urs.. o fox is a person who knows when to strike when the iron is hot and how to negotiate a deal all for his/ her benefit.
2. Shark: a completely agrresive go getter. someone who knows what they want and are willing to go to any lengths to achieve what they want. even at the cost of harming others. amibition that is unparalled.
3. Teddy Bear: soft. cuddly. without opinions. someone who agrees with what you have to say.. and the second person, third person.. well you get the drift.
4. Turtle: this is a person who has suicidal tendancies. very depressed with life. and if there any complications in life then they run back into their shell. they are like fuck life, fuck the relationship. its not worth it.
apparently there is a fifth animal that people can be categorised into but its so ideal that not many (any!) can fit into that mould. the Owl .. i forgot essentially what the owl is.. but bascially the ideal.
the teacher said honestly which animal would you be if you were faced in a crisis situation. what is your default setting. basiclaly he meant that if u had a crisis and no one was watching how would react..? Honestly!
well i am turtle. not that i am suicidal. but that does not mean i have not thought about it. but the relationship part.. yeah that is essentially me. i would be like fuck it nothing in life is worth it. (though i know its not necessarily true).

firstly...abt learning in classroom..i second ur opinion....and remeber the recent song paathshaala from rang de...it explains it all...
secondly...i cant get this idea of classifying humans in categories.....each of us is multi faceted...we act sometimes, and we react...we are jus products of our condtioning...each of us has so many faces that we wont be aware of until a situation arises....
however...explaining common human tendencies using animal behaviors , i find interesting ....but still i'd say
iam
a shark when i make up my mind,
a teddy bear when i cant...
a fox when i am in similar company and such behavior is the need of the hour
and an owl , when i observe ppl..(yea i like studyin ppl, their expressions ..u know that kinda thing...)
as for the turtle...i ve been there...in my past...when ppl said things to me ...i took them to my heart, and i withdrew and hid myself in my shell...but college changed all that.and as for relationships , i try to keep ppl happy....i understand that it takes two to tango.
P.S:abt the turtles,.....
their protective shell...keeps ppl out BUT also sorta imprisons itself in its own cage, afraid to deal with the world.if i were god i'd give turltes a bit more courage ;)
hehehe.. ok ur missing the point here. i can also be mutifacted(depends on the situation).. the point is what is your default setting. think very carefully.. cause even i argued till i was blue in the face then it struck me.
default here means sort of like how would you react if you away from prying eyes. what would your first reaction be... in any crisis..
and about the turtle thing yeah well if i cant change the situation then i do jack about it.. and yeah it can be a prison.
exactly..the default setting..think im a turtle..ive even got a pet baby turtle..his names cumbubble..! but serisouly ..wierd part is i think i like being a turtle..wch is stupid coz thats not so desirable is it..but it kinda goes wt other self-destructive tendencies..lol..we're all dying anwy..oh n i have some friends in ur college..lol yeah its not the most popular almamator..
and about the multifacted part i completely agree that there can be no black or white. nothing in life is that simple. shades of grey would best describe most people.
and this is a broad category where they are generalising to get a feel of a persons intial reaction in any situation. but it does not mean that a person is/ has those particular tendancies all the time.
@ icy highs: can relate about the self destructive tendancies... and yeah stella maris was/ is a fuck all place to study in.. though there were a few good memories.
and about the part of being a turtle.. i can relate again.. i dont like getting hurt. opening up just kind of sets you up for disappointment.. and im not interested in taking that chance..
but then again at times i surprise myself with the ability be a shark, fox or teddy bear. but thts like once in a blue moon.
the indifference is a farce in itself. sometimes you feel so much it just hurts. so its easier not thinking about it...
ok got the point now...so away from prying eyes,in times of crisis....i am the fox..nothing else...manipulating ppl for personal gain is not my forte, but i try....and often fail too ;)...
P.S:i can totally relate with the indifference stuff ...easier to ignore the pain.
finally!! and a majority of the people in college said the same thing.. aparently there r very few turtles in this world.
well ,scratch-my back-and-i-scratch-urs, is the most common human tendency in times of crisis...no wonder the huge majority in college...
but now since u mentioned ...find the turtles interstin...i wonder what makes them so insecure and jus try to chuck the matter and receed to their shells...??
as a turtle urself, u must be able to tell me why?(im kinda baffled).....i am dyin to know.
scratch my back n all huh..? sreekanth u pervert ..lol..but seriosuly i think as u grow older u get more set in wtvr mould u r..like wtvr shark, fox thingies i had going for me in say, school definitly got flushed down the loo in college in chennai..this last year back in trivandrum sort of cemented me in my introvertism..doubt i can evr break out of my shell agen..
yeah right!..me pervert!?..ha ha
(its all in ur mind!!)
introvertism..hmm...maybe thats what keeps u in the shell..too much thought and too less action.
and NO!... totally disagree abt moulds...they're broken everyday...life is random and flexible...permanance has no place...except in memories.
@ icy highs: couldnt agree with you more collge killed any of the other animal tendncies in me..
@ sreicanth: uhhh about the turtle part... i think its easier this way. when you give you expect.. there its again the concept of expectations.. and them always falling short.. and life in general is a matter of perspective!! ;) (i know i have gone on and on about this).. but to me its how you view life..what you consider important.. worth fighting for.. worth living for. to me there are not too many things.. in both categories.
and yeah agree that moulds are not permanent. but there are some of us who would wish they were.. atleast that would be constant..
ok got it(hopefully)...so u dont like randomness in life? right?...so u would atleast know what exactly to expect, and expectations not falling short...hmm interestin...
but what about surprises..when results exceed expectations (i know it dosent happen frequently)...but still ur losing out on such experiences.arent u?
u know what contradictory is my freaking middle name... i want soo much.. more like evrything lol.. bas itna sa khwaab hain..:0 but it shuld all be on my own terms.. and the inevitably come with an expiry tag.. i get bored very easily. and yeah i guess i could be missing out.. but i dont know if getting hurt is in the process of the experience is a worthy price to pay..
http://selfdestructiverebel.blogspot.com/2005/10/myriad-facets.html
this post shoudl give you a bettr idea.. ;)
yep..safety is assuring, warming and also too much of it ,boring...
its heart wrenching at times to lose this oldness, this routine...and to be left to fend for ourselves in something total unknown...
but theres something called adventure, risk taking mentality (atleast curiosity )in all of us,(to varying degrees...and to satisfy this we need to take chances ... and what about experiences and memories??.if each day was same...would u cherish what u have or crave for the lost?? dosent familiarity breed contempt??
P.S:goin on off on tangents here...but...loved the comparison of life to the flavors of baskin robbins..;)...u like icecream? ..which flavor?
and no prob abt being contradictory...shows ur human...maybe more than others;)
COFFEE all the damn way...the rest come second. i love icecreams.. dont mind anything except pista.. and vanilla which i think is very plain and tasteless.. so i add coffee powder to it.. hehehe ;)
so cafe vanilla it is....clever combination!
ya even i hate vanilla....and pista is fine...but i love butterscotch :)
but the best part of ice creams (sundaes)...is the cherry on top..love them..slurpy!...(the fresh ones not the canned ones!)
errr...is there a fifth?
Cant relate to any of the four.
these were jus the basic categories.. its just a broad generalisation.. and its talking about ur default setting.. no body could relate to it at first... me nor any of my friends.. everyone was like im a combo of all 4.. but this talks of ur inital reaction... think about it and let me know..
wanted to ask what the hell does baliga mean? i actually like ur name..has a nice ring to it..oh n very imprssed by ur coll. coz i just heard from someone in ur dept. what ur syllabus is like..beat gen n neo-feminism n post-modernity n metaphysics! n i thought itd b another typical shakespeare-frost tango..cool man..
hey.. baliga is my surname.. tht is what all my friends call me.. so i jus use tht to sign in.. and yea the syllabus is 'ambitious' to say the least.. but the way its taught. teachers. the department (save a few).. the less said the better.
dude...im the owl
haha no....but i have this major owl fascination.
hmmm
hhhahahahaha... the owl is boring ma..no excitement.. but seriously what u are ma??
turtle...simply because I cant relate to the other 3.
lol
