ok today has been a very tiring day.. we had our first factory visit.. and well we learnt more today than in the whole 6 months we have spent in that damn college of ours! anyway the ride to the factory(in tambaram) was fun.. the headphones were glued to my head and it was awesome.
we got there and dude to the din of the machines and incessant chatter of the workers we could not hear our teacher thank god! it was a very interesting experience. the workers donot understand the countries or the brands they are working on! while i was dying reading the damn labels. all the clothes made are for export only. hence the quality is on a level that the average indian buyer wouldnt recognise if it hit him on the damn head. and the workers are all sourced from near by villages so their exposure is at a minimum. and they donot understand the value of what they are making. a garment (shirt/ top) is made at 1 dollar... but the price tag says 24.50 $... can you even imagine the profit? and the one dollar mind you is inclusive of overheads/ tax blah blah...
and then later we got to meet the chairman of the export house.. the annual turnover of the house is about 35 crores.. yet you couldnt have met a more humble or down to earth person than him. anyway the day was a very nice/ educative.. but very tiring...
the chairman said (when asked why they dont meet deadlines) that no one plans to fail.. but we fail, because we fail to plan.

Now that is a real example of globalisation....
BUT what i find funny is, that the same companies...sell us even poorer quality clothes at the price equivalent to its 25 dollar cost!...and we buy it!
its ironic that we ,the largest producers of cotton and natural fabrics (in the world)... buy products made from these very materials at international prices...so even the average indian domestic buyer is totally exploited.
anyways...ur true about learning more in the factory./on the field than in the boring confines of a classroom...atleast u know what actually happens!i am total sucker for field trips...
and abt the chairman,
yes when we meet ppl , of great personal wealth, we contrast their behavior with their welath , and often they act contrary to expectations.And then, to our eyes, even their 'normality' adds to their greatness.anyways...nothin wrong wid that....jus an observation!
yes! that is what pisses me of about this country! why cant we manufacture international quality clothes for our own damn people?? i mean what we are not worthy of it?? and ultimately all the price label says 'made in india'!! it could be manufactured anywhere.. its reduced to such simple terms its not even funny!
and yeah we buy it! so its a 50-50 blame share...
....and yeah your observation about the chairman is right. we expect money to change peoples perception of life.. the comment really caught me off guard i must say.. ;)

only export my friend!! i would have given my soul for one for the jackets i saw there.. beautifull with faux fur and all... nt that i need in chennai..heheh.. but yeah.. ;)
