independence day.
well it seems like a long time back when i wrote a poem for school titled 'freedom a mirage' (if im not mistaken). and we are again here to celebrate the day india got her independence. i vaguely remember the poem and some of the key issues i raised then, they suprisingly are valid even now. so that should dash away any optimistic thoughts about g8 and becoming a developed nation right? what the fuck have we done with our hard won freedom!

well india hasn't fallen apart, that's one big achievement. india is still a vibrant democracy.
when you see iraq, there are three major tribes shiites, sunnis and kurds of the same religion, fighting amongst themselves, establishing democracy there seems next to impossible. when you look at india, despite differences in religious beliefs, we have still stuck together, to make it the world's largest democracy.
ofcourse, incidents like religious riots in bombay and gujarat incident puts us to shame.
india was invited along with five
other nations, i believe, to attend the G8, not for nothing, the world has begun noticing india as a rising power. u.s. has recently signed a treaty with india to co-operate in the area of civil nuclear energy. the change in attitude, of u.s. towards india after the sanctions it imposed on us after pokhran, can be majorly attributed to india's developing economy and the resulting energy need.
ofcourse, we cannot claim india to be shining, in the rural areas people are still dying due to poverty, and it seems, poverty level in most of the rural areas is worser than sub-saharan africa.
In the end, it's not like we have done nothing, we have achieved something, and we do have a lot more to achieve. there are miles to go before we stop, agreed, all i am saying is, we are walking.
